Biosolutions Zealand I

Biosolutions Zealand: Building and developing an international position of strength in the biosolutions sector.

Background and Purpose

With a densely populated biosolutions and biotechnology industry in Region Zealand, including the so-called Biotech City Kalundborg, Region Zealand has the potential to become a world-leading biosolutions lighthouse and become leading within development, testing, and upscaling of biotechnological products and solutions.

But there are gaps in the infrastructure when it comes to innovation, process, and product development. Before Region Zealand can realize its potential, there is a need for, among other things:

  • Access to open demonstration and scale-up facilities that will enable startups to successfully move from lab to market
  • More research-based small and medium-sized enterprises and spin-outs
  • Access to skilled labor and risk-averse capital

The purpose of Biosolutions Zealand is to make Region Zealand and Denmark a leading global biosolutions lighthouse that supports the transition to more energy-efficient, bio-based, and climate-neutral production worldwide.

The project's focus areas are therefore to:

  • Ensure the skilled workforce the industry needs
  • Create more jobs and economically sustainable growth
  • Support entrepreneurs and startups to become more competitive on their path to market

How to proceed

In early 2022, a number of initiatives were launched to ensure the development of new biotechnologies and support the scaling up of new solutions, ideas, and products to enable companies' transition to more sustainable ingredients or products and to more energy-efficient processes.

In addition, new educational offers and activities have been developed to attract and retain knowledge in Region Zealand and Denmark.

Results

Biosolutions Zealand is paving the way towards more optimal framework conditions, which are necessary to reach Region Zealand's potential of becoming a biosolutions lighthouse that will further contribute to the green transition.

Examples of project activities:

  • Support for FermHub Zealand: A state-of-the-art industrial biofermentation platform (inaugurated in 2023)
  • Development of the Master of Science in Biosolutions program in collaboration with University of Copenhagen, KU (offered in Summer 2024)
  • Development of the Industry Master of Science in Engineering, Biomanufacturing in collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark, DTU (offered in Summer 2023)
