GREENclean

Efficient and sustainable cleaning in the food and biotech industry

In a nutshell

GREENclean is a development and demonstration project to make CIP (Cleaning-In-Place) in the dairy, brewing and biotech industries more efficient, cost-effective and sustainable.

The project focuses specifically on cleaning membranes used for filtration and separation - a process that today requires large amounts of water, energy and chemicals.

How does it work?

GREENclean is developing a new CIP system that combines:

  • Sensors that measure the cleaning process in real-time.
  • Advanced hybrid models that can predict when a surface is clean.
  • Optimized enzymes and cleaning recipes.

This way, cleaning can be stopped exactly when the membrane is clean - not before or after.
The result is significantly lower resource consumption and major savings for the industry.

Environmental benefits

  • Up to 15% lower water consumption (equivalent to 3.5 million m³/year at Arla EU)
  • 20% lower energy consumption (1.5 PJ/year)
  • 82,000 tons less CO₂ emissions per year
  • 5,300 tons less chemicals used per year

Economic and commercial potential

GREENclean can provide major operational savings and open new markets for Danish companies.
With over 12,000 dairies and 10,000 breweries in the EU alone, the potential is worth billions.
