Biosolutions & Life Science

Biosolutions & Life Science

We aim at creating a biosolutions lighthouse in Region Zealand with the Biotech City Kalundborg as the epicenter. One way of creating this is by supporting Scandinavia’s largest biotech cluster with knowledge and development.

Read more about some of Knowledge Hub Zealand’s activities within bio solutions below.

What is Biosolutions?

The bio solutions sector is characterized by companies that develop and produce innovative climate and environmental solutions especially within pharma and life science, and Denmark holds a strength position within the biotechnological area concerning both research and science, innovation, and production.

Working with bio solutions and life science is essential to solve the climate and environmental challenges the world faces. This requires ambitious efforts within biotechnological innovation and production of medicine, food, animal feed, building materials, environmental friendly biobased chemicals, pesticides etc. that need development and production by means of modern biotechnological large scale production.

Knowledge Hub Zealand supports these efforts.

Biosolutions & Life Science

Biosolution in the Biotech City

Knowledge Hub Zealand is closely attached to Biotekbyen – the Biotech City of Kalundborg, which is a biotechnological powerhouse with Scandinavia’s largest biotech and process industry and the world’s leading industrial symbiosis. The City e.g. holds leading pharma, biotech, and biosolutions companies such as Novo Nordisk, Novozymes, and Chr. Hansen including an extensive follow-up industry of subcontractors and a growing ecosystem of SMEs and start-ups, which Knowledge Hub Zealand has close collaboration with.

Knowledge Hub Zealand also serves as secretariat for the Biotech City Alliance, which is a unique partnership between local companies, educational and public institutions, and Kalundborg Municipality. We share knowledge and competencies to collectively support and strengthen Kalundborg’s scientific community, business framework conditions, and industrial sustainability.

Biosolutions Zealand

With partners from all over Denmark, Knowledge Hub Zealand works to create a biosolutions lighthouse: Bio Solutions Zealand in Region Zealand. The large concentration of bio solutions and biotechnological companies in Zealand contributes to a unique environment with great knowledge and competencies to build on.

The Government Growth Team describes how Region Zealand has the potential to become world-leading within bio solutions, and how it has the potential to create optimal framework conditions for testing, developing, and up-scaling of biotechnological products and solutions.

Yet, we find gaps in the infrastructure concerning innovation and development. Gaps that need to be filled to make Bio Solutions Zealand an internationally leading biosolutions lighthouse. These gaps e.g. concern access to open demonstration and up-scale facilities that is essential for start-ups to faster go from lab level to business case, more research-based SMEs and spin-outs, as well as access to highly educated labor and venture capital.

The up-scaling efforts in Region Zealand will moreover become an important national ressource, because they play a key role in securing start-ups’ survival from the “Valley of Death” in their journey from promising lab scale research results to competitive production company.

Bio Solutions Zealand’s vision

  • To become an international biosolutions lighthouse with sustainable solutions to global challenges. The lighthouse has its epicenter in Zealand and consists of a well-functioning partnership between small and large companies from all 17 Zealand municipalities, educational and knowledge institutions, and new innovation-ready SMEs and spin-outs/scale-ups from all over the country.
  • To establish demonstration, upscale and test facilities that make a seamless transition from lab level to business case possible without having to cross Danish borders or largely invest in own facilities. This would make Region Zealand an attractive hub for Danish and foreign companies within bio solutions.
  • To become a world-famous regional ecosystem contributing to significant growth and development within the Danish food and bio ressource cluster and to globally contribute to the green transition towards a bio-based and climate-neutral production.

Bio Change Zealand

Knowledge Hub Zealand manages the project Bio Change Zealand, which helps and supports biotech and food businesses and their subcontractors in their journeys towards growth, sales, and export. The project offers help with research, business development, and network to take the companies to the next level – and across national borders.

As project manager we e.g. share our large network from partners in the Biotech City network with the companies in the Bio Change Zealand project.

Nordic Bio Solutions

Knowledge Hub Zealand is lead partner in Nordic Bio Solutions Hub, which among other things works to:

  • Support the current development of the ground-breaking bio solutions test and upscale environment taking place on commercial terms based on the extensive industrial infrastructure in the Biotech City of Kalundborg
  • Facilitate cooperation between large companies, start-ups, knowledge institutions, and public authorities to strengthen framework conditions; terms, standards, and approval procedures for Danish and Swedish bio solutions.
  • Facilitate cooperation between large companies, start-ups, knowledge institutions, GTS-institutes etc. to document effects and mature go-to-market initiatives for biotechnological solutions such as alternative food proteines, new bio material, bio-based pesticides etc.
  • Coordinate larger funding initiatives within the bio solutions area with knowledge institutions, start-ups, and large companies in Greater Copenhagen as consortium partners to attract external funding for support and development of the Greater Copenhagen bio solutions efforts.
